One or Zero?

Three years ago the communal aerials in London Yard were upgraded to take On Digital (now ITV Digital) signals. This appeared to provide the answer to the ban (spelt out in the leases of London Yard properties) on satellite dishes being attached to properties. ITV Digital is, at the time of going to press [ugh], still providing its service but, if it does go into liquidation and ceases to provide access to multiple TV channels and Premier League football, the situation will need to be urgently reviewed.

Fortunately, at the AGM in January, there was a feeling that the provision of communal satellite dishes (probably one on the roof of each block) should be re-accessed. This is well under way and one quotation has been received and others are expected in the coming weeks. These quotes will be considered by the Board and its is likely that owners will be written to with a request to share the cost of the installation of the dishes. This has been done before, about six years ago. At that time it was still possible that the estate would be cabled and the majority of owners were not prepared to pay for the installation of communal dishes. Now that it is known that the estate will not be cabled, it is possible that they may agree this time.

If ITV Digital does go into liquidation it is likely that those with set top boxes will continue to be able to receive the "free to air" channels. This, limited provision, would not be acceptable to many Yarders. And, if the property owners decline to invest in communal satellite dishes, the Board will be forced to review its enforcement policy regarding individual dishes. The modern dishes are, after all, less obvious than they once were and there are already about a dozen on the estate which the managing agents, despite letters to owners, have found impossible to shift.

Perhaps, when writing to owners regarding the installation of communal dishes, the abandoning of the prohibition of individual dishes could be offered as an alternative on which they could vote.

CCTV Proposals

Jonathan Channing has compiled a weighty set of proposals and quotations from possible suppliers of CCTV equipment for London Yard. He has passed them to Board members to consider in preparation for the next Board meeting.

Go-ahead for Docklands extension

A Docklands Light Railway extension with a station at London City Airport has been given the go-ahead.

Transport Secretary Stephen Byers gave the green light for an additional five possible stations including the airport which has hitherto been without a direct rail link.

The extended line will run from Canning Town to North Woolwich. Mr Byers' acceptance of the scheme followed a public inquiry.

Spring has Sprung

Goldfish Galore

Have you seen the pond lately? For some reason there are now at least a thousand goldfish in it this year. It must be global warming. Remember it all started when a resident emptied an unwanted goldfish bowl into the pond.

YARDER JOKE

of the MONTH

Locked Out

One rainy evening, my husband, John, and I emerged from a restaurant only to find that he had locked the keys in the car. He insisted he could open the door with a wire coat hanger, so we went back to the restaurant to get one. There were none to be found.

John then ran to a department store a quarter-mile away and returned with a hanger. After a few attempts, he got the door open and we climbed in. As we sat there, soaked and cold, he stuck the hanger under his seat.

With a smug grin, he said, "Now if this ever happens again, I'll have one handy."

You must know better jokes than this - send them to the editor
