Avoid
the Lifts
During
a strike of the fire service it would be wise to avoid using the lifts
if you can possibly do so.
Past
experience has shown that when anyone has been trapped in a lift it has
invariably been the fire service which has released them. The lift
maintenance company is called but the response time is normally too slow
to satisfy the people trapped. The caretaker and security guard have
some theoretical knowledge on how to deal with the situation and it is
intended that they will receive further training from the lift company.
However, this training has not yet taken place and neither are on duty
after midnight. So, if you can avoid using the lifts it would be wise to
do so.
 Wild
Wind
The storm that struck London Yard during the weekend of the 26th
and 27th October did some damage. A few slates were blown off the roof
of Frans Hals Court and some leading dislodged from the roof of Van Gogh
Court.
Not
quite 1987, when Sevenoaks become
Oneoak, but the gusts were reaching 80 m.p.h. and anyone venturing out
onto a balcony risked having to pay landing fees at City Airport.

No
Speed Cameras on Manchester Road
Calls
by some local groups for the installation of speed cameras along
Manchester Road have been rejected by Tower Hamlets Council. A
spokesman said that Manchester Road did not meet the criteria
set down by the Government because it wasn't an accident black
spot.

Postcards
of the East End
This
site is devoted to postcards of the East End in its golden
age. For instance, this is the Fire
Station, Manchester Road Completed
in 1905 to replace earlier building of 1877 on the same site.
Built in the characteristic Queen Anne style of the London
County Council architects department. Following demise of the
horse-drawn engine the stables were converted to offices in
1925. Still in use
today - at least when not on strike.
