New Lamps

In order to increase security and improve the general lighting within the estate the lamps throughout London Yard are to be replaced for the first time since the development was built.

Three models of replacement lamps have been installed on Amsterdam Road in front of Van Gogh Court for evaluation. In truth, all three are a vast improvement on the existing lamps and also cut light pollution upwards. It is the intention of the new lamps to direct the maximum amount of light to the ground and thereby illuminating more of the dark areas. This will improve the security of the estate by reducing the number of places where activity can take place unseen. It is expected that a decision on which type of lamp will replace the existing model will be made by the Board of management at its meeting on 10th March.

If you have any comments to make on which model should be used throughout the estate leave your comments on the New Lamp Forum.

Anti-Social Hotline Success

A HOTLINE set up for residents in Tower Hamlets to report anti-social behaviour has been a great success, says the Council. The line, which was set up by a partnership between the police and the Council, acts as a service for people to report problems anonymously. PC Marion Mercer, from Tower Hamlets police, said: "The Hotline has been a success, with 300 calls received." The hotline number are 0800 917 5918 and 020 7364 5000.

Beat Officers increased to Six

There are now 160 new police officers working on various teams across the borough, with the Isle of Dogs benefiting from an additional two community officers.

These officers will join the four dedicated officers already working hard to reduce crime in the area. They will patrol the Millwall, Blackwall and Cubitt Town areas, as well as investigate criminal activity and offer further reassurance to the community.

East London History Society

The East London History Society, (founded 1952) exists to further interest in the history of East London, namely the London Boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Newham. As well as the East London Record the Society publishes two newsletters a year and organizes a program of talks. It also arranges local walks and two coach outings a year. A number of local history websites have been featured here but this one has some very funny old local cartoons such as this one.

Tony says Farewell

Tony Wicks, a 15 year resident of Van Gogh Court and this site's first webmaster, left London Yard in mid-February.

In the picture he is waving farewell to all the friends that he has made since his arrival in 1987. Londonyard.com wish him well in his new home and future life.

Peter Simms

'Journalist, adventurer, spy and friend.'

Late last year Sanda Simms telephoned me from France with the sad news that her husband, Peter, had died. I have very fond memories of regular gin and tonics at six p.m. in their flat in Frans Hals Court. Peter was a London Yard director from 1993 to 1998. Recently, whilst surfing the web, I came across his obituary published in the Boston Globe. Those who knew Peter may be interested in his colourful life. Click for obit.

Ron Coverson

Those of you who subscribe to the BBC Newsnight daily email giving details of what is to be included in the show will know that a joke is often included. Example: "When does Saddam Hussein have his tea? The same time Tariq Aziz." Londonyard.com has been collecting them for non-subscribers.
