Advertiser Steals our History - Allegedly

The East London Advertiser of 9th October sported a full page article entitled "200 Years of London Yard" in its regular 'Down Memory Lane' series.

The article attributed to one "Zoe Bolton" looked suspiciously like an edited version of the first page of the History of London Yard produced for this website by Angela Brown and Ron Coverson. Angela Brown said that she was, "flattered but, as a journalist, I would prefer to be paid".

One of the aims of londonyard.com is to raise the profile of London Yard, so, being read by local journalists and used for the basis of items published by the print media can be counted as yet another success.

Wanted - Volunteer to issue Parking Permits

In 1997, as a Board member, I set up the London Yard Parking Scheme in order to protect the interests of residents from the effects of the introduction of the Council's Controlled Parking Zone on the Isle of Dogs. Since that time I have been administering the scheme despite retiring from the Board 18 months ago.

If you are a permanent resident and would like to donate about one hour per week please contact me to discuss taking over.

The Ragged School Museum
The purpose of the Ragged School Museum is to make the unique hist
ory of the East End of London, and in particular of the Copperfield Road Ragged School, accessible to everyone. In a re-created classroom of the period, visitors can now experience how Victorian children were taught. There are also displays on local history, industry and life in the East End and a varied programme of temporary exhibitions.

Not out of the Wood yet

Although not officially confirmed - At its September meeting, the Board decided to stay with the present managing agents - Wood Management. The Board was successful in having the London Yard account moved from Wood's office in north London to their West End office. The distance between the office and London Yard was considered one of the major problems affecting the service delivered. The change of office will also mean that the account will be handled by different staff. This is expected to take place in December. Sometime in the new year, Wood Management expect to open an office in Docklands.

Light Dawns?

Rumour has it that the Board have finally decided on the design of the replacement street lamp globes. But, that their choice was not one of the samples set up early in the year for your comments.

Asda Site Development Still Not Fixed

At a public meeting, held in Jack Dash House on Thursday, 9th October, Heather Wills (above) explained the current position regarding the re-development of the Asda site. At the meeting local residents, whilst welcoming the proposed Ideas Store on the site, expressed their concern about the number of residential units (said to be 500) that the Council was considering allowing.

At the moment, the Council are still drawing up a specification of requirements and limitations for the site in anticipation of a planning application from Wal-Mart Asda. No application has yet been made.
