HMS Ark Royal Passes by

The aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal passed London Yard on it's three day visit to Greenwich during the afternoon of Wednesday 25th February.

The warship was towed backwards after being turned in the Blackwall Basin. The fifth vessel to bear the name, Ark Royal was built by Swan Hunters Ship Builders’ yard at Wallsend in December 1978 and launched by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. HMS Ark Royal was accepted into service on July 1 1985 and is 210 metres (683 feet) long. She has a maximum beam of 36 metres (117 feet) and a displacement of 20,000 tonnes.

Letting the Gas Out

Barry Morgan, our always resourceful caretaker. is seen helping to pump out the methane gas that accumulates under the rubber pond liner. Because London Yard was built on reclaimed marsh land, this has to be done every year. Ricky Lewis, the contractor responsible, has had to buy a new pump this year but, no doubt, he will get his money back over the years. The accumulation of methane gas is the reason why London Yard's buildings are built on stilts - have a close look.

Martin cleans up the pond

Martin Jackson has been busy clearing the litter and debris from the pond.

Unfortunately Martin found a terrapin which didn't survive the winter. It is hoped that some terrapins did survive along with the hundreds of goldfish present last year. We should know within the next few months.

£50k of Speed Machine

The fastest boat to be launched from our slipway must be this one undergoing trials and training for its racing future. Designed by Swede, Ocke Mannerfelt, it was manufactured by Mark Pascoe Ltd in Southampton. Ten boats have been produced with further orders already being placed for next season. The V24 race series has been endorsed the international governing body of powerboat racing and by the RYA, governing body of powerboat racing in the UK. Be warned - Not for the faint hearted.

"My doctor told me to start my exercise programme very gradually. Today I drove past a store that sells trainers."
