Beach Cleaned Up

About 30 London Yard residents turned out on Saturday morning (2nd September) to clean up the beach. This was the first event organised by residents using the London Yard web site - the first of many, we hope.

Not only paper, railway sleepers and shopping trolleys found their way to the tip but also broken glass by the bucket load.

The beach is now a cleaner and safer place for local people to enjoy. By noon everyone was ready to eat a hearty barbeque and get to know each other.

The event was originally the idea of John Raynor (Vermeer Court) who used the Notice Board facility on the web site to suggest that residents should get together to do something about the mess. The beach is owned by the Port of London Authority which has a policy of not cleaning such areas. David Thompson (Frans Hals Court) took it up and, with a little help, organised it. Thames 21, a group that organises the cleaning up of the Thames riverside, volunteered their expertise and equipment.

Thanks to Thames 21 for supplying the expertise and specialist equipment which made the beach cleaning both safe and effective.

Thanks to Asda for donating the food and drink for the barbeque - delicious! Steven Youngs must be a great talker as well as cook and DJ.

Communication - Communication - Communication

At the last Annual General Meeting the Board came under some criticism for failing to communicate with shareholders and residents. Since then the Board has addressed the criticism with:

All Change - Security and Caretaker

After 11 years of being our security guard, John Fanning and his son Keith have decided to leave us. John's wife has taken on a new job in Southampton so he has to go. John is also Keith's martial-arts instructor so he has decided to base himself there too. It is certain that all residents of London Yard regret losing them but wish them well in the future.

At the same time, Derek, the caretaker has decided to join his brother in his business.

Security

The Board has not decided how best to replace John and Keith who gave London Yard a personal and continual service. In the meantime, a security company has been retained on a short term contract. Likewise, a replacement has been found for the caretaker. More details next issue!
