London Yard Artist gets Show at the Dash

Christoph Noebel, a Vermeer Court resident and a Director of the management company, is showing his work at the Dash Gallery, Jack Dash House, off Marsh Wall, until 27th October. The gallery is open from 10 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday and admission is free.

When asked if his work had any relevance, or owed anything to his living at London Yard, Christoph said, "Any relevance to Docklands and specifically London Yard is very very hard to answer. Obviously, as I work from my studio at home, one can say that it offers a perfect place: its pretty quiet, excellent light and after an intense and concentrated work session, there is nothing better than stepping out on the balcony and enjoy the fresh air and river (and maybe a beer). This ambience is important, as art work consists largely of mental exercises and experiments and the right frame of mind is critical. Some of my photomontage pieces (e.g. 'Anatomy' and 'The Joke', both in the show) are about the inhuman nature of the 60/70's high-rise housing blocks and here the East End clearly offered a lot of impetus and nasty examples."

The final arrangements for providing London Yard's security, following Keith's resignation, are still being made. But, Lee Bolah provides most of our security at the moment - supplemented by his mate, Hamed. Say hello and introduce yourself!

Barry Morgan

New Caretaker

Barry Morgan, our new caretaker, is a local man and ex-docker. His wife is the school secretary at Cubitt Town school opposite London Yard.

Barry was on the Isle of Dogs when it declared UDI in 1970.

He is a very friendly guy so don't hesitate to say hello.

STRANGER ON THE SHORE

Cool music on a warm afternoon

It was a still, warm day by the riverbank.   The sound of a lone saxophonist  wafted on the breeze and echoed over the water.  Residents came on to their balconies and visitors sat on the steps. The air was silent except for the strains of jazz.

Those of us who have frequented our own Indian restaurant know how good the food is. But, this year the Good Food Guide has recognised its quality saying, "Docklanders [ugh - Ed] should appreciate what a gem they have on their doorsteps". We do - we do.

Firework Party and BBQ

Raising funds for Mudchute Park & Farm

Rumour has it that, after the great success of the beach cleanup party, a Firework and BBQ Party is being arranged for Friday, 3rd November on the beach. Pencil it into your diary and get the details, later this month, from:

David Thompson

Cool, professional jazz on a warm Saturday afternoon from one man playing  his heart out all alone on the beach.  But for Simon Astaphan, who lives at Bow,  this was a trip into his past.  When as a young musician seeking somewhere to practise, all alone and as loud and as long as he wanted, he made his way onto Poplarıs "shore" to rehearse.

Then London Yardıs beach was a derelict, deserted,  muddy piece of land, the barge builders long gone and  no developers in sight.  He would come here to play his saxophone for hours on end, with no one to listen, no one to complain and no one to move him on.

Simon a professional composer and musician   teaches youngsters in Bow and now, here on neighbouring Samuda Estate.  Which brought him back to his old stamping ground. And for old timeıs sake again on Saturday he stood in the same place making music.  And it was cool, summer jazz.

As he played his soprano sax, he appeared to be just as alone as he once was wrapped up in his music.   For London Yard it was a rare treat.   We all hope he comes back.

OH NO, SAYS ONO

Death of John Lennon - Anniversary Concert -

10th December - Palace Theatre

Theatre producer, and London Yard resident, Robert Gabriel has come up against the full might of Yoko Ono and her lawyers after revealing plans to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the death of John Lennon.

Robert has booked the Palace Theatre on December 10th for the charity fundraising event which was originally to be called "Lennon 2000". Yoko Ono has forbidden Lennon's name and photographs to be used.

The good news is that the event will take place under the title "L2K...All You Need Is.." with Gus McGregor, star of "Buddy", playing Lennon. Gabriel is inviting Noel Gallagher, Ken Livingstone and Cynthia and Julian Lennon to speak about what John Lennon meant to them.

Julian Lennon has recently accused Yoko Ono of cheapening Lennon's legacy with blatant commercialism. He bemoaned her decision to sell some of John Lennon's art work as limited editions.

Robert Gabriel says that the Musical Director and Assistant Director all live opposite to each other in London Yard and that they regularly have Creative Team Meets here, and draw inspiration and relaxation from the pond area.
