"Trying to find where the garden is." That is the initial reaction of David Hunwick who has taken over the London Yard gardening contract. He was, of course, referring to the proliferation of ivy throughout the development. At present he, and his team, are "cutting back, creating access and tackling the [expletive deleted] ivy." He will be bringing forward suggestions for the improvement of the development once the existing situation is under control. |

If
you are one of sign on and choose your DLR station. Then the details of the next trains will be displayed on your phone. Possibly more useful is their DAISY system which does the same thing, and in more detail, on your home or office PC. Now you can time your rush to the station knowing when the next train is due (allegedly). Details of both systems are available on the DLR website:-

I Was Branded By Ronnie Kray
Lenny Hamilton
Paperback - Pegasus Elliot MacKenzie Publishers - £7.99 available from Asda
If
you have observed with disbelief the homage paid to the
Krays by eastenders this is the book to assure you that not
all people who knew them subscribe to the myth. Lenny Hamilton was born in Stepney in 1931. Having been branded by Ronnie, and subsequently having the lives of his family threatened whilst serving a term of imprisonment, Lenny explains why he broke the code of silence. "The most truthful book about the Kray twins violence and intimidation. It gives a true account of their greed and brutality, and how they terrorised the people of London's Eastend." Ronnie Bender [who served 18 years after having been convicted of murder with the Kray twins].
If you still want the myth, the Krays website is: |

1500 Hits to this Website
In its first six months of operation, the London Yard website has been accessed 1,500 times. This means that most residents have accessed the site about once per month, or, there is a particularly sad individual in Vermeer Court with nothing else to do. Anyway, considering that the website is purely an information source for a small residential development, indications are that residents are finding it useful. |
Cockney On Line
To be a true Londoner ... a Cockney, you have to be born within hearing distance of bells of St. Mary le Bow, Cheapside, in the City of London. The Bow Bells were the curfew bells prompting people to extinguish their fires before going to bed, as was the case throughout medieval Europe. New cockneys are born mostly at the ancient hospital of St. Bartholomew in Smithfield. `Cockney' literally means cock's egg, a misshapen egg such as sometimes laid by young hens. Originally used when referring to a weak townsman, opposed to the tougher countryman, by the 17th Century the term, through banter, came to mean a Londoner. |
